You know a movie is in trouble when it lands in the dreaded early January spot as this one did. MGM obviously wanted nothing to do with this picture and tried to push it off as fast as possible, while making a little money to cover the expenses of this disaster. What could have been an interesting story crashes before it even gets started with inept writing and shoddy acting by some well-known faces.

This movie throws out the basic plot - a genius who signs up to work for the bad guys with the enticement of riches, then suddenly has a change of heart when he learns who he is working for. Milo (Ryan Phillippe) is the genius computer programmer and Gary (Tim Robbins) is the bad guy who runs the evil computer software company. Alice (Claire Forlani) is Milo's girlfriend who is basically thrown in for eye-candy (probably to soften the blow of such a terrible script). While Phillipe's performance is forgettable, Robbins is the only character even mildly interesting in this film. But who really cares anyway, since most people won't get through one sitting of this picture at all.

This is a shockingly bad movie for director Peter Howitt, who also directed Sliding Doors, a very good movie that has some intelligence in its script. Maybe this is just a fluke, but Howitt is definitely better than this. This is a bad movie, bordering on terrible, and just helps confirm that movies that hit theaters in January are almost a foregone conclusion.
